Thurman — The town of Thurman may soon enter the digital age, if plans for a public-private partnership for establishing wireless broadband access in the mountainous municipality becomes reality.

Plans to develop a new townwide system of “white-space” broadband access were presented at a public meeting Wednesday Jan. 25 by Thurman Town Supervisor Evelyn Wood and Fred Engelmann, CEO of Rainmaker Network in Chestertown.

Engelmann said that if broadcast trials prove the new technology works well in Thurman’s terrain, broadband could theoretically be available to local residents as soon as this summer. The broadcast trials are expected to begin in two months.

Small businesses seek ways to get startup help

February 13th, 2012

GLENS FALLS — The grant money has been returned, but the need to help fledgling small businesses get started in Warren County remains, said members of the Greater Glens Falls Local Development Corp.

Members, at a board meeting Thursday, resolved to continue exploring whether the city-based economic group could operate a countywide “micro-enterprise” business financing and training program, which would provide assistance to businesses with six or fewer employees, with at least half the funding being used for start-up ventures.

Glens Falls Economic/Community Development Director Edward Bartholomew said supervisors of three towns in northern Warren County have contacted him asking if the city would consider operating a program.

Ski businesses persevere despite snowless winter

February 10th, 2012

By David Blow — Commentary The Post-Star | Posted: Thursday, February 9, 2012 12:21 am

It’s a tired and sad topic, as tired and sad as the views I’ve had from atop a handful of mountains from as far south as the Poconos and as far north as Old Forge.

The topic is the lack of snow – and the views, the endless seas of brown grass and leafless trees – are simply the illustration.

Another illustration of this cruddy, depressing winter is what winter carnival and festival organizers are having to do to try to persevere. I read a story in the Rutland Herald last week about how several snow-related events have to be canceled at a local winterfest there for obvious reasons. One of the replacement events: The wife carry, and yup, the story came with a photo of a guy hauling his wife on his shoulders.

Need I say more?

But just how bad has the lack of snow been for the ski industry? Depends who you talk to.

Charles “Chic” Wilson at Willard Mountain in Easton estimates that his bottom line, over a four-year average, is off probably 15 to 20 percent. It’s off more than that compared with last year, but that’s because last year was a “record year.”
