More builders across New York are getting homes certified under the state’s Energy Star program despite slightly higher costs for buyers.

Just over 13,000 Energy-Star built homes have been built since 2006, compared to 6,542 from 2001 to 2005, according to the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.

The big jump between the first half and second half of the decade occurred at a time when overall home construction slowed considerably during the recession.

The spike in oil prices, and other energy costs over the past several years, convinced many buyers the benefits of saving money over the long run outweighed the additional upfront cost of an Energy Star-certified home.

The homes consume less energy than typical homes because of extra insulation, high-efficient heating and cooling systems, air-tight windows and energy-saving appliances.

Those measures can add 1 percent to 3 percent to the home’s cost, according to NYSERDA. The increase is smaller for builders that construct homes that already exceed requirements under the state’s energy conservation code.

Residents of most Washington County villages can head to the polls Tuesday, March 20, to decide some local contested races.

In Salem, there’s a mayoral race, as incumbent Mayor Anne Dunigan is being challenged by Village Board member Robert Beaver.

In Hudson Falls, incumbents Jim Gallagher, Michael Horrigan and newcomber Jeffrey Smith, are vying for two Village Board seats.

In Whitehall, two incumbents and two challengers are vying for two open seats on the Village Board. Walter Sandford and Kenneth Bartholemew are currently trustees, their challengers are Jim Putorti and Ronald Rushia.

In Cambridge, three people are running for two board seats: incumbent trustee Alan Dupuis and candidates Valerie Reagan and Kathleen Ward.

The remaining villages either have no elections, or uncontested races. The Post-Star will have additional previews and information for voters leading up to the elections next week, and coverage of village elections in Washington and Saratoga counties on March 21.
