QUEENSBURY — Five months into new leadership, EDC Warren County is making some changes.

The economic development agency has put plans on hold to design a spec building for its Queensbury Industrial Park because of funding. It is working on a memorandum of understanding with the Washington County Local Development Corp. to create a one-stop shopping experience for developers. And EDC is seeking more money from Warren County next year for its initiatives.

EDC Warren County’s president, Vicky Pratt Gerbino, provided an update on the agency’s progress at a meeting of the Warren County Economic Growth Committee Thursday morning.

Update from Washington

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

Dear Friend,

I have a few important updates to share with you regarding work here in Washington, DC and in New York.  First, the House and Senate passed three fair trade agreements with South Korea, Panama, and Columbia, which were signed into law by President Obama.  These agreements were a key component of the President’s jobs plan and I think a fine example of Congress working together in a bipartisan, bicameral way.  Key to these agreements is that they level the playing field for our famers and businesses.  For example, 99 percent of imports from Columbia and 98 percent from Panama were already duty free.  These new trade agreements allow U.S. exports to receive the same favorable treatment, with the President estimating that they will ultimately create 250,000 jobs.  There will be a direct benefit to Upstate New York as well, with businesses being able to access new markets and farmers increasing their exports by nearly $30 million a year.

How a Call Center Can and Will Improve Your Small Business

How a Call Center Can and Will Improve Your Small Business
In today’s professional world, customers want immediate response and timely results. Oftentimes, it is difficult to keep up with the demand being placed. Small companies can become especially frustrated because they do not employ enough workers to perform the company’s tasks and interact with the customers at the same time. Fortunately, there is a solution. Companies can develop or outsource a call center, or a centralized place where all of the calls to a company are handled.

Q: What will a call center do for my small business?

A: Call centers help to save employees time so that they can improve their productivity and increase profit. For example, consider a bakery manager. The phone might be ringing off the hook with orders for goods. However, the more time spent on the phone is less manpower being used to make delicious cookies or cupcakes. In this situation, a call center could receive phone calls for the bakery and take orders. The employees could then bake the orders without being interrupted by other phone orders. The call center could also receive customer feedback that could lead to improving the business.

Q: How many people should my call center include?

A: Of course there is no one answer to this question. Every business has different needs. One variable is the call duration. Some businesses may have extended conversations with their customers to design custom packages. Others may be straightforward orders and the calls last only seconds. Another variable is the frequency of calls. How many calls are expected for a half-hour’s time? If the answer is in the hundreds, the business is certainly going to need more than one or two agents at the call center. The Erlang calculator was designed to determine how many agents are recommended and appropriate in different situations.

Q: What services do I want the call center to perform for my small business?

A: The two major categories of call center services are customer service and sales. The latter is responsible for scheduling appointments, taking orders and interacting with marketers who wish to advertise with a company. Customer service support makes itself available for feedback from customers. They may also make outgoing calls to customers who have not left a response on their own. With some businesses they may act as dispatchers, improving communication between employees and making sure each is aware of their personal goals for the day. Customer service support doesn’t need to communicate exclusively with phones. They may also handle the e-mail for the company.

Q: Could I set up a call center from my own home or business?

A: It is absolutely possible and a rather economic decision to establish your own call center. However, it is not as simple as equipping a few people with phones. There are several factors that should be kept in mind.

  • First, it is important to have a space specially designated for the call center. This area should be out of the way from regular traffic. If the call center is out of the home, be sure it isn’t near a child’s bedroom or a family room that has a predisposition for being noisy. If at a business, it should not be affected by interference from the typical goings-on.
  • Secondly, agents should be using multi-line phone systems and headsets. This equipment can be expensive, especially in mass quantities, but be advised that when used for business it becomes tax deductible.
  • Also, be sure that all computers being used by agents have separate accounts for users. If a manager’s family uses the computer when it isn’t in use by agents, the files are at risk of being deleted or corrupted. The only person who should be able to access an agent’s account is that agent.
  • Finally, invest in comfortable and durable furniture. They will likely be used all throughout business hours and it is only right to provide agents with a proper work environment.

Q: What is the overall goal in hiring a call center for my small business?

A: In a single sentence: A call center will serve as the primary point of contact for a business. The point of hiring a supplier is to make interactions with the business convenient and effective. The people who answer the phone are representative of the business so it is important to hire ones who are right for the job, not those who will do it for the least amount of money. Not all providers are created equal and finding the appropriate call center takes intense research. Before settling on a provider, consider the impact it will have on the company’s image.

Angio Dynamics moving England operation to Queensbury, adding 8 jobs

Friday, October 14th, 2011

Date: Thursday, October 13, 2011, 7:14am EDT

Medical device-maker Angio Dynamics Inc. expects to add eight jobs over the next two or three months as it moves overseas manufacturing to Queensbury, New York.

AngioDynamics (Nasdaq: ANGO) is the second-biggest public company based in the Capital Region, when ranked by market value.

AngioDynamics has had a laser-production site in Cambridge, England, as a result of a prior acquisition.

The company has decided to move the work to Queensbury, the site of a sizable manufacturing operation with 305 workers.

The move will be completed in February 2012 and cost $1.6 million, though AngioDynamics expects to save $1 million a year with the switch. The company disclosed the move in a regulatory filing this month.

AngioDynamics is headquartered in Latham, with 84 employees there. The global company designs and produces medical devices for the treatment of tumors and diseases that affect the circulatory system.

RECHARGE NY PROGRAM UPDATE INFORMATION MEETING

Friday, October 14th, 2011

Please join the EDC Warren County and Washington County LDC  for NYPA Recharge NY session  in Glens Falls on Friday October 21 from 8:30am to 10:30am at the Barton Café at 5 Ridge Street.

Please pass this information along to anyone know who might benefit.

A couple weeks ago EDC Warren County attended the Recharge NY kickoff session at the Crowne Plaza in Albany with NYPA. Both the NYPA reps will come to do an info session here with a Q & A quickly,  due to relatively high number of power users up our way. They agreed and set a date of Friday October 21 to come up and address a group.  Space is limited, so please RSVP with John Wheately at JWheately@edcwc.org asap.

As you know this is a topic that needs immediate attention due to the CFA application deadline plus the November 30th date set by NYPA for ReCharge NY program.  We agree we should approach this as an opportunity for a coordinated regional business community event.

As you know time is of the essence as the CFA process needs to be used to apply for this and it is no small effort even for a November 30 deadline since there are over 196 questions and plenty of documentation required. The sooner companies know about this and are able to proceed the better.

New York loses GE solar plant to Colorado

ALBANY — New York state was a finalist for the country’s largest thin-film solar panel plant, but General Electric Co. will instead open the massive factory in Colorado.

New York, however, is receiving a consolation prize: 100 new GE jobs, split evenly between GE Global Research in Niskayuna and GE’s renewable energy headquarters in Schenectady.

GE officials said the company chose Colorado because it needed to quickly ramp up production, and the Capital Region did not have an existing building that met the company’s needs.

In the Denver suburb of Aurora, the $300 million plant will be built within an existing 200,000-square-foot building that can be easily retrofitted and expanded.

The plant is expected to create 350 new jobs.

“We’ll be moving equipment into the building as soon as January,” said Vic Abate, vice president of GE’s renewable energy business.

GE announced its plans for the plant in April, a move  that several states to vie for the plant. New York state and Colorado were particularly aggressive — in part because the states were seen as front runners from the beginning.

The Cuomo administration has been riding a wave of economic victories, including last month’s announcement of a major semiconductor consortium to be headquartered at the College for Nanoscale Science and Engineering at the University at Albany.

Administration officials noted that the 100 jobs headed to Schenectady and Niskayuna resulted without any state aid.

“Bringing 100 new high tech jobs to the Capital Region without any taxpayer subsidy is a real victory for our upstate economy,” Lt. Governor Bob Duffy said in a statement Thursday.

The Capital Region was considered a likely site for the factory, because of GE’s historic connections to Schenectady and the area’s thriving solar and clean-technology industries.

PrimeStar Solar, owned by GE, plans to begin retrofitting the Colorado warehouse next month and could double its size within the next two years.

The city of Aurora provided a $20 million subsidy for the plant, with the state of Colorado kicking in $2 million, according to the Denver Post.

An announcement by Colorado officials was expected Friday.

Sources within the Cuomo administration said New York will be given top consideration for a second plant as part of GE’s aggressive solar manufacturing program.

When GE announced plans last April to build what was billed as the nation’s largest solar panel manufacturing plant, it said site selection would be based on a number of factors, including the site’s proximity to scientific and engineering talent; the economics of the site, such as the cost and availability of utilities, power and water; the supply chain for necessary materials; and federal, state and local incentives.

The panels the plant would produce would be the most efficient of their type, GE said. The panels have achieved efficiency of nearly 13 percent, the highest that’s been reported for so-called thin film technology.

S.B.A.-Backed Lending Set a Record in 2011

How small-business issues are shaping politics and policy.

The Small Business Administration did record business in 2011, guaranteeing more money in loans to small companies than in any year in its history. But the very smallest businesses, seeking the smallest loans, had more trouble getting an S.B.A. guarantee than in 2010.

In all, by the end of the S.B.A.’s fiscal year, on September 30th, gross loan approvals reached $19.6 billion in the agency’s general business, or 7(a), loan program and $4.8 billion in capital investment loans issued in what’s known as the 504 program. In just the first quarter of the year (the last three months of calendar year 2010), the agency approved $9 billion in 7(a) loans, nearly as much as it had approved in all of 2009. Gross loan approvals, which reflects totals before canceled loans are subtracted, is how the agency commonly reports its lending statistics.
